Export Training
Many companies still use the incestuous method of training that is they nominate a member of staff to train newcomers and retrain existing export import staff, their rational is that first of all its cost effective that is no cost at all and secondly that the trainees are being trained by a person who has experience of the companies export import procedures. In most cases these are false assumptions, such training has one big pitfall, the trainer may not be aware of current best practices and rules of exporting importing outside their working environment, and in fact they are passing on incorrect information or information which has not been thought through. It is surprising how many companies are still using Incoterms 2000 instead of the current edition Incoterms 2010!! Many companies don’t know why they sell under a particular term of delivery beyond the fact that they were told to do so by old Mr. Jones the shipping manager who retired ten years ago!!!
I have heard so many times from a HR manager “we don’t need export import training as we have an excellent freight forwarder who takes care of everything” What?….. a company who hands their exports imports over to a third party and does not have the knowledge to check up on their freight forwarders performance costs etc., this is not a way to run a company!!!
Independent export import training delivered by professional tutors is a must for any exporting importing company if only to confirm what they are doing is up to date best practice and to keep abreast of developments in documentation rules and regulations. It is very important that new employees are trained in current practices in exporting and exporting in order that they can contribute to the overall success of the company.
When a company sends their employees on a training course they are saying “you are worth investing in and this course can help you progress within the company”, in other words a training course also acts as a morale booster for the employee.
